Drilling Rig Common Minor Problems Self-Check Manual
Core Principles: External to Internal, Simple to Complex. Safety First, Check Only After Power Off/Engine Turns Off!
I. Difficulty or Weak Engine Starting
Symptom: Starter motor does not turn or turns weakly.
Check Power Supply: Check if battery terminals are loose or oxidized.
Check Voltage: Use a multimeter to check if the battery voltage is too low (below 24V).
Symptom: Starter motor turns, but engine does not start.
Check Fuel: First check if there is fuel in the tank and if the fuel line switch is open.
Check Fuel System: Loosen the diesel filter bleed screw, pump fuel by hand, and check for air (bubbles) or poor fuel flow. This may be due to wax buildup (in winter) or blockage in the fuel system.
Check Filters: Check if the air filter and diesel filter are too dirty or clogged.
II. Mud Pump Abnormalities
Symptom: Sudden drop in pump pressure, reduced displacement.
Check for Leaks: Immediately check the high-pressure manifold, unions, and gate valves for leaks.
Check the pump internals: The piston, cylinder liner, or valve body may be worn or damaged, requiring shutdown and replacement.
Symptom: Pump pressure is normal, but water is not pumping.
Check the suction line: Check if the showerhead (filter) is clogged with mud or sand.
Check the seals: Check if the suction pipe flange gasket is aged and leaking.
III. Turntable/Top Drive Abnormalities
Symptom: Turntable does not rotate or its speed is unstable.
Check the controls: Check if the driver's control box/operating lever positions and wiring harnesses are loose.
Check the air/hydraulic pressure: Check if the air or hydraulic pressure driving the turntable reaches the rated value. This may be due to air/oil line leaks or a faulty pressure valve.
Symptom: Abnormal noise during rotation.
Check lubrication: Check if the turntable gearbox oil level is too low.
Check the fixings: Check if the turntable fixing bolts are loose.
IV. Lifting System (Brakes, Winches) Abnormalities
Symptoms: Brake failure or slippage
Check Brake Band: Inspect whether the brake band pads are excessively worn or contaminated with oil.
Check Clearance: Inspect whether the clearance between the brake band and the brake drum is too large and needs adjustment.
Check Air Pressure: For pneumatic-assisted brakes, check if the air pressure is insufficient.
Symptoms: Unstable movement of the traveling block
Check Wire Rope: Inspect whether the main rope is misaligned or has jumped out of the pulley groove.
Check Clutch: Inspect whether the winch clutch is slipping.
V. Electrical System Abnormalities
Symptoms: No display on the instrument panel or indicator lights not lit
Check Main Power Supply: Inspect whether the main switch has tripped or the fuse has blown.
Check Grounding: Inspect whether the battery negative grounding wire is secure.
Symptoms: Malfunction of a specific electrical appliance (e.g., windshield wipers, lights)
Check Fuses: First check the independent fuse controlling that function.
Check Wiring: Inspect whether the relevant wiring plugs are loose.
