Basic Maintenance Knowledge for Making Drilling Rigs More Durable
To make your drilling rig, your "iron partner," more durable and less prone to breakdowns, the key is not to repair problems after they occur, but to solidify a set of "preventive maintenance" basic knowledge into daily operating habits. The core of this knowledge revolves around three words: cleaning, lubrication, and tightening. Consistently performing these basic tasks will significantly extend equipment life and reduce unexpected downtime and costly repairs.
Maintenance begins with "cleaning and inspection" before and after each use. Drilling rigs deal with mud and water every day, and mud is one of the biggest "enemies" of the equipment. After each operation, you must not simply stop the machine and leave. The mud attached to the drill pipe, drill platform, mud pump, vibrating screen, and all moving parts must be thoroughly washed and cleaned immediately. In particular, the filter screens and pipes of the mud circulation system must be cleaned to prevent mud from drying and hardening, leading to blockages or increased corrosion. Before starting work each day, spend ten minutes walking around the machine, using your eyes to look, your hands to feel, and a hammer to tap: check if all screws are loose; check for oil leaks in hydraulic oil pipes and joints; check for broken wires or wear on steel cables; and ensure that the belts are properly tensioned.
Lubrication is the "blood" of mechanical equipment and the most effective means of reducing wear. You must strictly follow the equipment manual's instructions, adding or replacing lubricating oil/grease to all specified lubrication points (such as bearings, chains, gears, and slides) on time, in the correct quantity, and with the correct type of lubricant. In dusty environments, the lubrication cycle may even need to be shortened. Special attention should be paid to the lubrication of high-speed moving parts such as the piston rod and crankshaft of the mud pump. Using appropriate, clean lubricants and preventing dust and water from entering the lubrication points is just as important as the lubrication itself. Establishing a simple lubrication schedule and strictly adhering to it is fundamental to ensuring the smooth operation of the equipment's internal components.
Regular tightening and preventive replacement can elevate maintenance to a higher level. The intense vibration of the drilling rig during operation can easily cause bolts to loosen. The bolts on all critical connection points (such as the chassis, turntable, power head, and derrick) should be systematically re-checked and tightened weekly or after each well is completed. At the same time, it's important to be proactive about replacing wear parts; don't wait until they are completely broken before replacing them. Regularly inspect the wear condition of drill bits, slips, brake pads, seals, and filters based on usage. Once they reach their safe wear limit, replace them immediately. This is like regularly changing the oil and brake pads in your car; it costs a little money, but it prevents bigger problems down the road. Establish a maintenance log for your equipment, recording the date and details of each maintenance and replacement. This will help you better understand the equipment's condition and extend its lifespan.
